Academic programmes
Our purpose
The Academic Department at AICMAR is concerned to equip theologians, students and other Christian leaders to engage biblically with contemporary issues facing the church and society in modern Africa.
We are committed to both studying the Bible and to understanding our changing African culture. We are convinced that evangelical scholarship has a key role to play in helping Christians to think and live for Christ today and to engage effectively with our world.
We focus on providing resources for post-graduate research and study in biblical and contemporary African issues. Such resources include the excellent Chadwick Library. We also provide an arena for discussing contemporary issues through our seminars, public lectures, conferences and publications.
AICMAR is an interdenominational institute and welcomes Christians—from any denomination and at all levels of study—to use our facilities.
Academic Resources
The Annual School of Theology (AST)
Well-known African and Africanist theologians are invited to present papers at this conference held every August in Butere. Previous speakers have included Rev Prof Kwame Bediako, Prof Esther Mombo, Rev Prof Stephen Noll, and Rev Dr Joseph Galgalo.
Forums and Public Lectures
We facilitate occasional academic forums and public lectures, in which issues such as Christian Leadership in Contemporary Africa and Christian Ministry as a Vocation are considered from an African Christian perspective.
Academic Supervision
The Staff at our Academic Department are available to offer supervision and guidance to those undertaking research or undergraduate degrees at other institutions, as well as to others using the Chadwick Library for academic study.
